Building a Path That Will Stand The Test of Time
Step 1: Consultation to Develop Your Pathway Needs & Preferences: A representative will come to your home to go over what you want and need in a pathway and how it can be incorporated into your yard, as well as your current landscape and hardscape. We will also take an assessment of the topography of your yard, including water run-off and drainage issues, and discuss what type of pathway is best suited for your needs based on your yard’s terrain. In addition, during this meeting, we will also determine what size and shape of pathway you would like to have installed, as well as whether or not you have any specific features that you would like to see incorporated into your pathway, such as lighting, benches, fire pits, etc. Finally, we will provide you with some initial ideas of what your new pathway could look like and answer any questions you may have regarding the installation process.
Step 2: Plan the Pathway Based Upon What Was Discussed During Your Consultation: After we meet with you and determine what type of pathway you are looking for, we will create a detailed plan for your pathway. This plan will include: Exact location of each portion of the pathway; Dimensions and widths of each section of the pathway; Radius of each curve and transition point; All connections to existing areas of hard-scaping; Your choices of finishes and all specifications regarding those finishes; Drainage solution(s).
Step 3: Prepare the Site So That It Is Ready to Accept the New Pathway: To ensure the long life of your new pathway, it must be properly prepared before construction begins. To do so, we will: Mark the area where each section of the pathway will be located and remove all obstructions such as plants, trees, rocks, etc.; Dig down to the required depth (typically 6-8 inches); Grade the area to allow for proper drainage and slope; Compact the sub-grade extensively to provide a stable base for the pathway.
Step 4: Install the Base Material for the Pathway: We typically use crushed stone or gravel as the base material for our pathways. This material is laid down in layers and compacted to provide a stable base. Each layer is uniformly thick and is properly graded to ensure the proper flow of water.
Step 5: Set the Forms to Define the Dimensions of the Pathway: Forms are used to define the dimensions of each section of the pathway. We set these forms along each curve and layout of the pathway, and make sure they are set up to the same width throughout. Forms are also set up to help us achieve the desired slope and grade of the pathway and to give us a reference point when applying decorative edges. If you are having decorative edges applied, we will also set up the necessary forms for them.
Step 6: Add Reinforcement to Help Control Cracking: Wire mesh or fiber reinforcement is added to help control cracking in the pathway. This reinforcement is positioned appropriately within the thickness of the slab and is adequate to cover the entire length of the pathway.
Step 7: Place the Concrete for the Pathway: The quality of the concrete used for the pathway is very important. We place the concrete in sections, spread it to a uniform thickness (typically 4 inches), and consolidate it to get rid of air pockets. Once consolidated, we screed the concrete to the proper grade and slope to match the forms and edge restraints.
Step 8: Finish the Pathway: We add the finishing touches to the pathway by creating the surface texture of your choice, detailing the edges for a smooth and finished appearance, forming the control joints at the correct intervals (typically every 4-5 feet), and ensuring that the pathway will drain properly.
Step 9: Apply Decorations (if applicable): If you choose to have a decorative finish, such as stamped, colored, or specialty finishes, we will apply the techniques at the right time and in the right way to create even and consistent patterns and colors. We will detail the transitions and borders and ensure a high-quality, professional-looking finish.
Step 10: Cure the Pathway and Protect It to Ensure Full Strength: Once the pathway has been completed and finished, it must be cured properly in order to reach its maximum strength. We will protect the pathway from excessive moisture loss and premature traffic, and maintain the proper conditions to allow the concrete to fully develop its strength.

Maintenance and Care
Keeping Walkways Beautiful
Cleaning: Regularly clean your walkways by sweeping or blowing debris off weekly. Every month, use a gentle cleaning agent on the walkways to remove dirt and stains and rinse them with water. Use a power washer on an annual basis when necessary, and make sure you are using the correct amount of pressure.
Preventing Stains: If you spill something on the walkways, clean it up as soon as possible. This is especially important with organic material that will leave a stain.
