Custom Concrete Walkways and Paths in Pembroke Pines, FL

Connect Your Spaces with Beautiful, Functional Walkways

A well-built concrete walkway does much more than just connect point A to point B—it can help direct traffic flow, help protect your yard, enhance the curb appeal of your home, and increase your property’s value. At Pembroke Pines Concrete Solutions, we are experts at creating and building concrete walkways and paths that offer both functional benefits and aesthetic appeal.

No matter if you want a front entrance walkway to welcome visitors, a path on the side of your house to allow you easy access to utilities, a winding pathway through your gardens, or a commercial pedestrian walkway to withstand large amounts of foot traffic, concrete is the best option because it has an incredible amount of durability, versatility, and value.

In comparison to other options for walkways that are either temporary and will quickly degrade, or that have high maintenance and require frequent upkeep, properly constructed and installed concrete walkways provide decades of reliable service while requiring virtually no maintenance. The extreme weather conditions found in Florida cannot damage them; they keep mud from being tracked into your home by people walking on them; they prevent the grass beneath the path from becoming worn down; and they help define the circulation of your outdoor living spaces and establish order in your exterior spaces.

We understand all aspects of designing and installing walkways—from the proper widths based on how the walkway will be used, to the correct slopes for water to drain off of and for pedestrians to easily navigate the path, to selecting safe surface textures, and integrating the walkway into your existing yard and architectural features. We build pathways from start to finish that make both the beauty and functionality of your property better.

Benefits of Concrete Walkways

Why Concrete is the Ideal Walkway Material

Long-lasting durability: A concrete walkway will continue to function for many decades under heavy foot traffic, extreme temperatures, and rain conditions. It will never degrade as gravel does by dispersing and losing shape, or disintegrate as wood does from rotting.

Accessibility in all weather: Whether you’re walking on the walkway during rain, sunshine, or anything in between, a concrete walkway provides a safe and clean surface. Mud puddles don’t form, the grass doesn’t become slippery, and the gravel doesn’t get tracked into your house.

Low Maintenance: After installation, a concrete walkway requires only periodic cleaning and, every now and then, applying a sealant. There is no need to weed between pavers, reapply gravel, or stain the wood, as maintenance of a concrete walkway is easy and uncomplicated.

Walkways also promote safety and accessibility: The textured surface of a concrete walkway provides great traction, whether it is dry or wet. In addition, the walkways can be built with a slight incline to meet ADA standards for wheelchair and mobility devices.

Protects your landscape: By keeping foot traffic off of your lawn and allowing people to follow designated paths, damage to your lawn, soil compaction, and harm to your plants can be prevented. This keeps your lawn looking healthy and your landscaping looking beautiful.

The design versatility of modern concrete: With modern concrete, there is a wide variety of design options available, such as color, texture, stamped patterns, borders, curved shapes, varying widths, and decorative elements. These design options allow for a very versatile look to complement any type of landscaping.

A long-term value: Although concrete walkways may initially appear to be expensive, they ultimately cost less than installing natural stone walkways, and their finish options make them visually comparable. Plus, the long lifespan of concrete walkways and their low maintenance needs create a superior return on investment.

Walkway Design Options

Create Your Perfect Pathway

Standard Finishes:

  • Broom Finish: For walkways that require a functional finish, Broom finishes create a low-visibility surface texture for good traction on wet surfaces and a professional look. This finish can be used for walkways of all types.

  • Smooth Trowel Finish: Smooth trowel finishes are ideal for formal entryways or covered walkways; they have a smooth, modern aesthetic and do not have to provide a high level of slip-resistance since they will typically be protected from the elements.

  • Exposed Aggregate: Exposed aggregate creates a textured, slip-resistant surface that exposes the natural beauty of the aggregate. It can also be used for both casual and high-end designs.

  • Salt Finish: Salt is pressed into new concrete and allowed to dissolve, leaving small holes that create a distinctive look and add traction to the surface.

Decorative Finishes:

  • Stamped Concrete Walkways: Stamped concrete walkways allow you to transform your walkways into attractive design features by creating patterned surfaces that resemble brick, slate, flagstone, cobblestone, or wood planks. Designers and homeowners can create custom color schemes and pattern styles based on their homes’ architectural style.

  • Stained/Colored Concrete: Colored integral colors or stains available in a wide range of earth tones, grays, terra cotta, etc., complement your home’s exterior paint scheme and landscaping design.

  • Scored Patterns: Scored patterns allow designers and homeowners to create visual interest through scored geometric designs, faux-stone patterns, or other custom designs with no additional maintenance required.

  • Borders & Bands: Borders and bands help define walkways with contrasting colors, textures, or decorative borders, which may be used to create architectural interest and visually separate one area from another.

  • Multi-Finish Walkways: Using multiple finishes in a single walkway allows designers and homeowners to create “zones” of visual interest while providing the same functional benefits as using a single finish throughout.

Our Walkway Installation Process

Building a Path That Will Stand The Test of Time

  1. Step 1: Consultation to Develop Your Pathway Needs & Preferences: A representative will come to your home to go over what you want and need in a pathway and how it can be incorporated into your yard, as well as your current landscape and hardscape. We will also take an assessment of the topography of your yard, including water run-off and drainage issues, and discuss what type of pathway is best suited for your needs based on your yard’s terrain. In addition, during this meeting, we will also determine what size and shape of pathway you would like to have installed, as well as whether or not you have any specific features that you would like to see incorporated into your pathway, such as lighting, benches, fire pits, etc. Finally, we will provide you with some initial ideas of what your new pathway could look like and answer any questions you may have regarding the installation process.

  2. Step 2: Plan the Pathway Based Upon What Was Discussed During Your Consultation: After we meet with you and determine what type of pathway you are looking for, we will create a detailed plan for your pathway. This plan will include: Exact location of each portion of the pathway; Dimensions and widths of each section of the pathway; Radius of each curve and transition point; All connections to existing areas of hard-scaping; Your choices of finishes and all specifications regarding those finishes; Drainage solution(s).

  3. Step 3: Prepare the Site So That It Is Ready to Accept the New Pathway: To ensure the long life of your new pathway, it must be properly prepared before construction begins. To do so, we will: Mark the area where each section of the pathway will be located and remove all obstructions such as plants, trees, rocks, etc.; Dig down to the required depth (typically 6-8 inches); Grade the area to allow for proper drainage and slope; Compact the sub-grade extensively to provide a stable base for the pathway.

  4. Step 4: Install the Base Material for the Pathway: We typically use crushed stone or gravel as the base material for our pathways. This material is laid down in layers and compacted to provide a stable base. Each layer is uniformly thick and is properly graded to ensure the proper flow of water.

  5. Step 5: Set the Forms to Define the Dimensions of the Pathway: Forms are used to define the dimensions of each section of the pathway. We set these forms along each curve and layout of the pathway, and make sure they are set up to the same width throughout. Forms are also set up to help us achieve the desired slope and grade of the pathway and to give us a reference point when applying decorative edges. If you are having decorative edges applied, we will also set up the necessary forms for them.

  6. Step 6: Add Reinforcement to Help Control Cracking: Wire mesh or fiber reinforcement is added to help control cracking in the pathway. This reinforcement is positioned appropriately within the thickness of the slab and is adequate to cover the entire length of the pathway.

  7. Step 7: Place the Concrete for the Pathway: The quality of the concrete used for the pathway is very important. We place the concrete in sections, spread it to a uniform thickness (typically 4 inches), and consolidate it to get rid of air pockets. Once consolidated, we screed the concrete to the proper grade and slope to match the forms and edge restraints.

  8. Step 8: Finish the Pathway: We add the finishing touches to the pathway by creating the surface texture of your choice, detailing the edges for a smooth and finished appearance, forming the control joints at the correct intervals (typically every 4-5 feet), and ensuring that the pathway will drain properly.

  9. Step 9: Apply Decorations (if applicable): If you choose to have a decorative finish, such as stamped, colored, or specialty finishes, we will apply the techniques at the right time and in the right way to create even and consistent patterns and colors. We will detail the transitions and borders and ensure a high-quality, professional-looking finish.

  10. Step 10: Cure the Pathway and Protect It to Ensure Full Strength: Once the pathway has been completed and finished, it must be cured properly in order to reach its maximum strength. We will protect the pathway from excessive moisture loss and premature traffic, and maintain the proper conditions to allow the concrete to fully develop its strength.

Walkway Features and Enhancements

Personalize Your Pathways

Aesthetic Lighting Plan: Use a variety of options to create an aesthetic plan of lighting for your pathways, such as: low-voltage LED lighting systems; Solar lights on edge; Embedded lights into concrete; Bollard fixtures for walkways to enhance evening ambiance and safety.

Design Steps to Integrate: In design steps for walking surfaces where you have grade changes, you should incorporate them so they will have similar materials and finishes to the walk surface. The treads and risers need to be correct according to building codes.

Border Decoration: Provide a clear distinction between the two (or more) areas by using contrasting colors; various textures or patterns; Brick or Stone border(s); or plant-edged softening of hardscape.

House Number Markers: Create house number markers that are incorporated into the stamped concrete; Colored sections; Or decorative inlay creating an entry way “functional art” in your walkways.

Seating Area: Create seating areas in your walkways at scenic points by widening your walkways and placing benches, extended viewing areas, and resting areas in longer paths.

Pocket Plantings: Create cutouts within your walkways for small trees, ornamental grasses, and flowering plants to soften the hardscape and integrate your walkway into the surrounding landscaping.

Decorative Drains: Decorative grates can be used where required, and should match the architectural style of your home to maintain both aesthetics and function.

Maintenance and Care

Keeping Walkways Beautiful

Cleaning: Regularly clean your walkways by sweeping or blowing debris off weekly. Every month, use a gentle cleaning agent on the walkways to remove dirt and stains and rinse them with water. Use a power washer on an annual basis when necessary, and make sure you are using the correct amount of pressure.

Preventing Stains: If you spill something on the walkways, clean it up as soon as possible. This is especially important with organic material that will leave a stain. Don’t use harsh chemicals or acidic cleaners. Remove berry and leaf stains as soon as they occur so that tannins don’t permanently stain your walkways.

Scheduling Seals: Seal your walkways every 2-3 years to protect the surface and for visual appeal. The more traffic that you have on your walkways, the more often you should seal them. Before sealing, be sure to clean all dirt and debris from the walkways.

Weeding Joints: As weeds grow into joints, they need to be removed immediately. Also, if necessary, seal the joint to prevent future weed problems. Due to their composition, concrete walkways typically create fewer weed problems than paver walkways.

Winter Care: Although this is rare in Pembroke Pines, never apply deicing salt to your walkways if there is a possibility of frost. Instead, use sand for traction.

Edging Maintenance: Trim your lawn regularly to prevent the grass from growing onto your walkways. Additionally, keep mulch around plants away from your walkways to prevent soil from building up on them.

Root Heave Of Trees: Check your mature trees for signs of tree root heaving. Early detection can help prevent damage to your walkways and potentially save you money in replacing walkway sections.

If you follow these simple maintenance procedures, your concrete walkways can last 30-40 years or longer.
